Koreatown’s pop explosion @ the Annex

DJ Gerald Belanger extended only 38 Facebook invites to last Saturday’s Pop! Goes the world! party, a Korean and Japanese dance-music celebration he hosts monthly at the Annex Wreckroom. Promotion elsewhere was minimal: Apart from postering in Koreatown, word was left largely to the grapevine. Somehow, over 400 enthusiastic partygoers turned up. While Korean and Japanese party music (K-pop and J-pop, respectively) dominate dance floors on the other side of the globe, fans in North America remain an ultra-niche subculture. In Toronto, it’s mostly confined to the diaspora of East Asian students at karaoke bars and soju joints in the Annex and Koreatown.
