Features 'Mama, i am gay', the son reveals
A mom's perspective when her son told her that he is gay.
FRANCISTOWN: "This revelation has really turned my world upside down. Like a sharp spear, the words have pierced through my heart leaving me feeling dejected and feeling like a worthless human being.
"Why does it have to happen to my son? What wrong have I done in this world to deserve such a punishment from God?"
These are the words of 45-year-old, single parent, Sega (not her real name). These lamentations have been triggered by her 24-year-old son's shocking revelation of his sexual orientation. The day of the revelation will forever remain engraved in her mind. It is the day in which, as she puts it: "I lost my son, though he is still alive and we are living under the same roof. On that day, I did not know what to say to my son. I was not sure whether he was still my real son or not. But physically he was still the same".
She reveals that it was in the afternoon on that fateful day when the boy decided to reveal the truth that he had been hiding from her all along. "He approached me with a smile that I was used to because we were very close.
He held me tight and whispered in my ears that he wanted to tell me something," she says. Having seen him with a few girls before, she says she immediately suspected that the boy might have impregnated one of them.
"That is what immediately came to my mind. My mind started playing the videos of the faces of the girlfriends that I have seen with him. He immediately called me into his room and I sat on his bedside," she says. She says that, "a pin drop silence followed before I urged him to tell me whatever he wanted to tell me. He looked down and tears started flooding his eyes before declaring that: "Mum I wanted to tell you that I am gay. I am tired of hiding this fact from you".
Sega says that though her son had said a few sentences the only word that she heard and that continues to ring in her mind is 'gay'. "That word was like a deadly blow that knocked me off. I felt confused. I started sweating. My whole world was crumbling. I could see my world falling apart in front of my eyes. I felt like my son is no more though he was right there beside me," she maintains.
She reveals that that night the shock and anger did not permit her peaceful sleep. "I had difficulties sleeping. I cried uncontrollably. I tried to recollect myself and to figure out what might have gone wrong with my boy but to no avail," she says.
She had no alternative but to accept this hard to accept fact. "I had to accept that my son is different from others. I accepted that the few girlfriends that I have seen and even the last beautiful one who was officially introduced to me was just one of the many attempts by my son to fight off the truth that was burning inside him," she says.
She adds, "I now became suspicious that the different boys that I usually see with my son might turn out to be the real girlfriends". She says that of particular note was her son's friend who would always visit at month end. "I was always told that this friend was staying in Gaborone. My son also always made numerous trips to Gaborone," she reveals. She says that, "though I am trying to accept my son as he is, I still face difficulties. This is mainly presented by religious convictions. As a Christian, I at times tend to think that my son is possessed by demons and that one day they will leave him and he will be a normal person again".
She has however gone for counselling and is beginning to accept that "as human beings, we are different. It is not an easy thing but I have no choice here because he is my son, my own blood and flesh that I carried for nine months. I therefore cannot disown him because of his condition".
Although she is somehow disappointed, Sega is full of praises for her son. "At least he was able to be assertive and bold enough to tell me the truth. I will always love him and respect him for that," she says.
Anita Lebengo, a psychology and sociology lecturer at the Institute of Health Sciences in Francistown says that, "the issue of sexual orientation remains a challenge. This is so because as members of societies we are conformists and are bound by our respective societal norms and values. These societal norms and values create a burden of having to fulfil societal obligations and expectations. One of the clear societal expectations is that sexual relationships must and have to happen between people of opposite sexes".
She says, "because this is the understanding that has come to be viewed as the accepted standard or norm, anybody who engages in anything contrary to this is regarded as a misfit in the society and deserves to be punished".
She says that the societal norms and values have a corresponding effect on the way individuals think. "This explains why it will always be difficult for most people to publicly declare or express their sexual orientation. Only those who are strong enough are able to break from the established norm and publicly celebrate their true sexual orientation," she says.
She says that all forms of persuasion are used to try to cement and justify the societal norms and values. "At times religion and culture are used to try and justify condemnation of any other forms of sexual orientation apart from the socially acceptable ones".

Gay Asians reveal racism problems
BBC News actually reports on this... surprising!
Gay Asian men living in Yorkshire say they are facing increasing racial abuse from within the gay community.
hey claim the problem means that some of them are fearing for their own safety and have decided to stay at home or just suffer in silence.Naz from Wakefield explained that when he goes out on to the gay scene in Leeds and Bradford he always sees or suffers from racial abuse."I have a fear now when I go out that there will be racism directed towards me and my friends," he told BBC Asian Network."It makes us feel very insecure and I don't think its worth going out because of the problems we face."
Ali from Bradford is a regular on the gay scene in the North of England. He goes out every week and tries to ignore the insults but says, inevitably, the racism does get to him. "If I go out then I don't like to go on my own," he said. "I always go with friends. "We get looked at in a funny way. We don't get served in bars unless we protest and we get called Paki or have to deal with comments like 'here come the suicide bombers'." Both Ali and Naz go to get help and advice from a group called ABC in Bradford who provide a support network for Asian and black gay men in West Yorkshire.

Dozens of gay men detained in Beijing
Dozens or even hundreds of gay men who had gathered at an outdoor pick-up spot in Beijing on Sunday night were rounded up and detained briefly in a major police swoop, according to media reports.
State-run People's Daily Online reported on Sep 28, 2010:
Hundreds of gay men have been rounded up and taken away in an ongoing police operation at Mudanyuan in Haidian district, Beijing.
About 20 police vehicles carrying four officers each including SWAT teams invaded the outdoor gay hangout Sunday night.
About 20 police vehicles carrying four officers each including SWAT teams invaded the outdoor gay hangout Sunday night. Police hit the area again late last night.
"You can't imagine how deeply over 200 of us were wounded by this experience," one of the arrested gay men told the Global Times Monday on condition of anonymity.
He refused to discuss details of his treatment by the police.
They were taken to the Huayuanlu police station, revealed an online post on a website popular with Mudanyuan visitors. "They were required to show their identity cards, take a blood test, have their photo taken and leave their fingerprints."
The campaign was just part of the typical annual citywide public security inspection ahead of the National Day holiday, said Beijing Public Security Bureau spokesman Zi Xiangdong.
He did not elaborate what regulations had been violated by the seized men.
AFP via Yahoo News:
Officers and riot police descended on Mudanyuan, a forested area in northern Beijing that is the capital's largest gay pick-up spot, late Sunday and Monday, said Guo Ziyang, a project manager at the Beijing Gay Working Group.
"According to those who were there, riot and normal police detained more than 80 people on Sunday, made them register and took photos, and then they let them go," Guo, whose organisation campaigns for gay rights, told AFP.

Kenya Shimizu
Kenya Shimizu has a really classic Japanese style. He expresses Japanese guys and their Samurai-spirits which Western guys may find interesting. His works are exactly what those who are interested in Japan want to see. He used to draw illustrations for gay magazines including G-men, but he recently has started to show his original works, and has put value on more artistic activities.
Kenya is one of the artists who had most enquiries at my ‘Boys Life’ exhibition at Mardi Gras last year. He came to Australia with his partner to experience Mardis Gras and Australian life. His exhibitions in England two years ago had a huge success and his many works were sold out. I expect he will have more responses from overseas in the future. However, he has had few opportunities to show his works and I would say it is generally precious to see his works in person. He showed a few of his past and latest works at the last year’s exhibition, by the way. It seems he has been constantly working. All of his works will be new this time. Enjoy!

Haruna Ai
Haruna, Japan famous "transsexual talent" will be running a marathon for charity. Although many were concerned whether she could handle the task, Ai showed her training progress to the press. When she was initially chosen as the runner, all she cared about was her makeup melting away. However, during the public training session, her makeup was all taken off by her sweat. Ai said, “I don’t care about makeup any more.” It seems like she is ready to show off her “Ohnishi Kenji” (her real name) face.

Tears to our eyes..Wish the world could be like this. Freedom to love and marry the one they love.
Chinese Male Homosexualities: Memba, Tongzhi and Golden Boy
This book presents a groundbreaking exploration of masculinities and homosexualities amongst Chinese gay men. It provides a sociological account of masculinity, desire, sexuality, identity and citizenship in contemporary Chinese societies, and within the constellation of global culture.
Kong reports the results of an extensive ethnographic study of contemporary Chinese gay men in a wide range of different locations including mainland China, Hong Kong and the Chinese overseas community in London, showing how Chinese gay men live their everyday lives. Relating Chinese male homosexuality to the extensive social and cultural theories on gender, sexuality and the body, postcolonialism and globalisation, the book examines the idea of queer space and numerous 'queer flows' – of capital, bodies, ideas, images, and commodities – around the world.
The book concludes that different gay male identities – such as the conspicuously consuming memba in Hong Kong, the urban tongzhi, the 'money boy' in China and the feminised 'golden boy' in London – emerge in different locations, and are all caught up in the transnational flow of queer cultures which are at once local and global.

Nepal First Gay Pride
The LGBT festival will coincide with Gai Jatra, an age-old festival which commemorates those who have died in the past year and where participants dress up in outlandish costumes during a street possession.
Nepal's Blue Diamond Society (BDS) announced that it would hold the first gay pride parade alongside their annual Gaijatra International Pride Festival which would be their ninth this year.
The parade is slated to be held in 25 August 2010 at Basantapur Durbar Square in the capital city of Kathmandu.
In December 2007, Nepal's Supreme Court ordered the government to scrap laws that discriminate against gays. Although Nepalese laws did not explicitly criminalise homosexuality, unnatural sexual acts" which are not defined may be punishable with up to 1-year in prison and/or a 5000 RS (US$66) fine under the bestiality chapter of the country's civil (criminal) code.

Mr. HK 2010
The Mr Hong Kong 2010 will be crowned on August 21, 2010. The quality among the Top 10 contestants varied, it is said that organisers will increased production fee, providing 3D effect for viewers to enjoy Mr. HK contestants in swimwear and getting wet. It would even arrange viewers to enjoy the 3D effect in theaters and mall.
A spokesman expressed the reason why there are only 10 Mr. Hong Kong contestants is because they won’t divide them into youth and maturity groups anymore. Age ranges from 18 to 35 years old. Besides looking at their looks, they would also stress on performance, so that’s why among the contestants there are performers from Mainland TV station and gym teachers. Many also have fundamentals in kungfu. Several of them even know wing-chun.

Bye Bye Alex
Fans hoping to hear good news on Thursday night regarding So You Think You Can Dance favorite Alex Wong‘s injury, were sorely disappointed when judge Nigel Lythgoe said the ballet dancer, who thrilled audiences mostly recently with his historic hip-hop routine, would need surgery as soon as possible, followed by at least three months rest in order to make a full recovery.
We want to see more of Alex but due to his injury, we won't!
